The Ministry of Health has confirmed 15 more cases of the Indian variant in the country.
According to Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Rashid Aman, the Indian variant was detected from the 18 Covid-19 cases that were subjected to sequence analysis at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
Speaking Wednesday during the marking of the Nurses International Day, Dr. Aman assured Kenyans that the government was doing everything possible to ensure that the Indian variant doesn’t spread. He said the cases were not symptomatic adding that 70 more contacts were in isolation.
Last week on Wednesday the government announced that the coronavirus variant first detected in India had been found in the country.
The variant was first picked in five Indian nationals who arrived in the country on April 29 and are working in Kisumu County.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the coronavirus variant first found in India last year as a “variant of global concern”.
It said preliminary studies show the B.1.617 mutation spreads more easily than other variants and requires further study.
The variant has already spread to more than 30 countries, the WHO says.
Meanwhile, the country Wednesday reported 410 new coronavirus cases and 22 deaths. The positive cases were derived from a sample size of 3,799 tested in the last 24 hours representing a positivity rate of 10.8pc
18 people succumbed to the disease on diverse dates within the last one month and only four are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits pushing the cumulative fatalities to 2,950.
Of the cases, 393 are Kenyans while 17 are foreigners. 253 are males and 157 are females. The youngest is a five-month-old infant while the oldest is 100 years.
